Closing Workshop

Academic Workshop: Meaning of materials

In today’s design practice, traditional sayings such as ‘wood is cosy’, ‘metal is aloof’ or ‘plastic is cheap’ are less relevant and strict. Without a doubt, any material can inherit any meaning in a particular context. Therefore, this workshop is not about a design method that will guarantee material ‘x’ will evoke meaning ‘y’ in product ‘z’. Instead, this workshop is about (1) How people appraise materials, (2) How materials obtain their meanings, and (3) How product designers can involve meaning considerations into their materials selection processes?

Preparation for the workshop

The workshop attendances are required to bring one or two materials (a material sample or a material embodied in an object, see Figure 1) which they think is ‘strange’, or which they think is ‘elegant’. (In other words, you are supposed to select one (or both) of the given meanings: a strange material or an elegant material).
